What’s up with Fluorescent Diamonds?
I was appraising this ring today and I got this shot demonstrating fluorescence in some of the diamonds in the ring for my appraisal documentation.
For those who are interested, fluorescence occurs due to the diamonds atomic structure getting excited and vibrating causing the blue color when exposed to ultraviolet light. I have also seen green, orange and yellow fluorescence in diamonds. There is controversy in the gem trade about this phenomena. Some feel it is a negative and will ask for a discount. I feel as long as the fluorescence doesn’t cause any cloudiness in the diamond, I say go for it! It’s a very cool phenomenon.
